OT: Bring on Teh Funny

Sorry for the light posting this week. Busy with the real life job, trying to cram 3 days into 5 so I can take off Thursday and Friday for some new movie coming out. Behind the scenes, I'm working on a piece about Task Force Games' Prime Directive RPG (laying the groundwork for the more recent releases by ADB), and photos of the TOS Trek-like minis from Eureka Miniatures.

In the meantime, enjoy this "so true, it's funny" take on "Instruction Manuals for the USS Enterprise" courtesy of Cracked magazine online. I think I've seen more than half of these cited as reasons why Trek is a setting that's inherently broken for roleplaying.

T-minus 2 days and counting!

  2. Those are funny.

Re: exploding consoles ... I always assumed that they were designed so that the the ensign manning the console acts as a fuse, getting destroyed in the event of power surges in order to protect the valuable electronics inside the console. How do you think they get everything repaired so fast? Just flip the circuit breaker and put in another fuse.

  3. Loved The Onion piece. More than one person forwarded it to me in the past 2 days and asked if it applied to me.

  4. Fantastic!

Why would this make it a broken setting for an RPG? Actually this explains why its so awesome!

The ship is getting pounded and faceless lower decks NPCs are getting injured during a space battle until 'ZzzZtp'!!! A panel explodes in front of a PC sending him/her flailing backward. A little damage is taken to show this is serious.

Better this then the standard way to take damage in a Star Trek game, distruptor fire. Trust me, PC's are much more likely to embrace the exploding console then they are the 'green-glow-thats-makes-you-disappear'.

  5. I was thinking more about the references to "Ignore the Prime Directive" and the transporter jokes.
